about this site
The British Museum states: Whether termed ‘fakes’, ‘forgeries’, ‘replicas’ or ‘imitations’, these artefacts and artworks reveal fascinating stories of deception and detection, restoration, and cultural preservation from around the globe, stretching back from today to our ancient past.
This site is designed to highlight items sold as Rhodesian that are not authentic, rather than to expose sellers who may intentionally or unintentionally sell fakes. Some sellers may be named for different reasons, and some conversations I’ve had with them may be provided for context.
Ultimately, individuals can draw their own conclusions.
It is easier to know what to look for in a genuine item than to attempt to recognize all possible fakes. When you understand the key indicators of authenticity, identifying counterfeit items becomes relatively straightforward, especially the more obvious forgeries. One of the most challenging items to verify is the fake beret and collar badges of the Selous Scouts officers.
Photographs of fakes were obviously not taken by me. They are used purely for educational purposes.
Photographs of all authentic Rhodesian insignia were taken by me and were part of my collection.
Photographs have Lightbox which means if you click on them they go to their original size.
